Western Wake Farmers Market

We aim to make fresh produce accessible to all families in our community.

Western Wake Farmers Market, Inc. is on a mission to improve the resiliency of the local food system by increasing the participation of the community in local food consumption, and operating a robust marketplace that allows local food producers to earn a better living.

WWFM was established in 2009 by a group of Cary moms with the goal of feeding their families high-quality, delicious, local food. They set out to build a conveniently located, producer-only farmers market for their community. The market is unique in that it was founded and is run by an all-volunteer board made up of local consumers and community members.

In September 2013, Western Wake Farmers Market and The Town of Morrisville came together to address an opportunity. WWFM knew we would be displaced – due to development - from our initial location in Carpenter Village. ToM saw an opportunity to create an amenity that would serve the community for generations to come. Hence, leveraging a grant from The John Rex Endowment, and bringing in the Morrisville Community Garden as an additional collaborator, the Town of Morrisville Healthy Food Hub was born.

The intent of the Healthy Food Hub is to educate the community about the importance of healthy food and its collateral benefits. The MCG has established an educational garden to teach people how their food is grown and provide opportunities for them to grow food in a community environment. WWFM operates a farmers market every Saturday to provide people the opportunity to purchase locally produced food and learn from the producers. And the physical environment – a beautiful, park-like setting – is available to the community for additional programming.

The “Covid years” of 2020-2022 brought some big changes to our community, our vendors, and our operations, but through it all, WWFM navigated lockdowns, social distancing, and changes to consumer behavior with a determination to continue fulfilling our mission. We’re profoundly grateful for our loyal customers and our partners in the Town of Morrisville for their ongoing support through those challenging times.

We’re excited to move forward in 2023, exploring opportunities for community engagement, civic partnerships, and vendor participation.

Leadership

Daily operations and communications, including our weekly newsletter, are overseen by Market Manager Extraordinaire, Merlin Want.

“Hi! I'm Merlin, and I'm really looking forward to taking over from Debbie as the new WWFM manager. I'm relatively new to the area, having moved from DC in July '22 with my girlfriend who was starting PA school at Duke. I currently work at the NC State Treasurer's Department doing financial compliance.

“I am passionate about food, especially in improving access to quality produce, so hopefully we can grow Western Wake together to enrich our community and the farmers/local businesses that support it. Come by to say hi if you see me walking around, I would love to meet all of you!”

Please feel free to reach out to Merlin at info@wwfm.ag if you have any questions or ideas about WWFM.
